Game Over

What started out as the perfect training year and a close to perfect start of a training camp turned into the worst nightmare on Friday 23rd of April. As you can see from the previous blog entries training was going pretty well and most importantly throwing was going well in Chula Vista. Throwing has overall felt the best it's been since 2003 and then it happened…During a weight session on Friday 23rd I was going for a set of 6 reps with 77,5kg in bench, I did 5 and when I lowered the bar to go for the 6th attempt I just heard this terrible sound of something ripping in my right shoulder. I had two spotters who grabbed the bar, but the damage was already done.

I traveled back to Finland a week earlier than planned and had an MRI, which showed that my supraspinatus tendon was completely torn _ I knew already in Chula Vista it was bad, because I couldn't lift my arm at all after it happened…but I was hoping it wasn't quite that bad _ now the tendon has to be reattached and a lot of rehab is needed before I can lift my arm again. I'm having surgery on May 26th.

When this training season started in October I decided it was going to be my last one and I was going to put in everything I've got into it. I've worked 100% both physically and mentally and everything has been going great until…and now it's all gone. I know I will never be able to do another javelin competition or throwing session and that's what hurts the most. …the worst is actually that I didn't know I was taking the last throws of my life on Tuesday the 20th. It's just such an empty feeling. I had so much hope for this, "my last season", but it all ended before I got a chance to "put an end to it". For me "spearchuckers paradise" unfortunately turned in to "spearchuckers worst nightmare"…
